All In

I don’t know if it’s cultural, generational, or just human nature, but we all seem to spread ourselves quite thin.  Kids are encouraged to play sports, make good grades, and participate in extracurricular activities.  We normalize going to school, then to practice, then to clubs, then finishing homework, all while balancing healthy relationships with family and friends.  As we move into adulthood, we are used to the juggling act.  We work to establish successful careers while maintaining social lives and hobbies.  As we expand our families, the juggling act becomes a circus!  Not only are we responsible for ourselves, but for the people in our lives as well.  It’s pretty impressive, actually!

I read a quote this week from author Rachel Hollis: “You can only go all in on one thing, so what’s it gonna be?”

If you do the math, it makes sense.  You have 100% energy.  Will you spend 50% of your energy on family and 50% on work?  Or, 50% on family, 25% on work, and 25% on a hobby?  As the list grows longer, the amount of energy you can devote to each item shrinks.  The more you do, the less “all in” you are.

Though it is profound, I don’t think this quote should be taken 100% literally.  People are dynamic, and having multiple components of your life doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t doing your best in each area.  It means you have a vibrant, full life!

It’s an interesting statement, though, when you think about it like this: you can’t do it all.  You can do a lot, but you can’t do it all.  So, prioritizing is important!  What means the most to you?  What deserves the majority of your energy?  Are you wasting valuable portions of that 100% on things that aren’t worth your effort?
