Winter Is Coming
For all of the cold weather avoiders out there, please don’t hate me for mentioning the inevitable reality of winter’s impending doom. It’s mid September folks, and whether you’re a summer lover or a die-hard autumn fan, we all need to be prepared. The leaves are starting to come down, and keeping those gutters clear is crucial in avoiding slips on pools of ice.
A check on fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers is always a good idea. Batteries are cheap and easy, and they could save your life.
If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace or a cozy woodstove, consider having a professional pair of eyes give them a once-over.
As the heat turns on, you’ll want to make sure your furnace is working properly. Not only is it safer, but a functional furnace can be more cost efficient too. Frozen pipes are never fun, so a heating system that works is a must.
Speaking of heat, try reversing your ceiling fans. This pushes air upward and redistributes the warm air from your ceiling.
Critters may see your nice warm house and want to crash with you. Check your home’s exterior for any cracks and crevasses that could let rodents in.
If you have a seasonal or secondary home, it’s extra important to make sure your house will be secure while you’re not there. An alarm system with fire, burglar, and low temperature monitoring isn’t as costly as you may think, and companies have made installation way easier.
Insurance claims aren’t fun. Though we’re here for you if claim should occur, we want to help avoid claims as much as possible. Have a happy and safe fall (and don’t forget to blow out those apple scented candles when you leave the house!
