What are you doing for you?

This week I was asked a simple question:

“What are you doing for you?”

I proceeded to earnestly list all of the things I’ve been up to lately.

“Work has been really busy, but I like it that way.  I had to go to the dentist.  My friend is going through a break up, so I’m going to call and check on her later.  I got a new waterer for my cat that I’m going to set up.”

They laughed and shook their head.  “I didn’t ask what you’re doing, I asked what you’re doing for you.”

I revised my answer.  I explained that I’ve taken a break from the gym, started reading again, went on a fun trip, decorated the house, and have been making time for hobbies that help me destress.

Are your days spent crossing off items from your to-do list, or are you intentionally moving through life with purpose?

Sure, we all have tasks that we need to get done.  Reality can feel more like work than play, but making time for things that are just “for me” allow me to recharge.  I can’t accomplish anything on a dead battery.

What are you doing for you?
